May is Mental Health Awareness Month - Be Gentle!


Since 1949, Mental Health America and its affiliate organizations have led the Mental Health Awareness Campaign during the month of May. This month's theme is Life with a Mental Illness.

Mental Health America would like to invite anyone to share their experience living with a mental illness using the hashtag #MentalIllnessFeelsLike.

Speaking of feelings, I'd like to leave y'all with a quote from Maya Angelou:

"I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."

I think that this quote illuminates the importance of being considerate of how our thoughts, actions and energy make people feel. You never know what someone else is going through so always be gentle. As we honor the experiences of those living with mental illness this month, and every month for the matter, lets be gentle. Let's support instead of stigmatize or stereotype. Let's seek to understand.

And this idea doesn't stop with other people. We must also extend this consideration to ourselves. Let's do and say things to make ourselves feel good! Mental Health America has a great resource entitled "Stopping Stupid Thoughts." It is a helpful tool for encouraging positive self talk or thinking. Check it out here!

We all deal with stupid thoughts at anytime. I am guilty of being hard on myself. I often catch myself overanalyzing social interactions I have with others. Especially with those that hold positions of power such as a boss or supervisor. When I catch myself doing this, I will say to myself out loud or in my head: "you're overthinking this!"
