Winter Wellness

This graphic, courtesy of CDC Berkerley, makes a compelling case for being well this winter! Check out my tips for being well this winter season:

Eating Seasonally:

Eating seasonally is good for your health and good for the environment. Buying seasonally available items from your local farmer's market is good for the local economy and allows you to eat food at their peak freshness.

Non-seasonal foods are harvested early in areas where they are in season so that they can survive traveling long distances and can be kept on grocery store shelves longer. Eating foods in season in your area allows you to get foods harvest at their peak freshness, which also maintains nutrients.

Kale is a great winter green that is locally available. Check out my Kale-Apple Salad recipe on the Recipes page!

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV):

Malic acid found in ACV has antiviral properties that help prevent colds and boost the immune system. Reap these effects by adding 1-2 tablespoons of ACV to a glass of water.

If you do start to feel sick, ACV can relieve a sore throat. Gargling 1/4 cup of ACV and 1/4 cup warm water can soothe a sore throat and kill germs in the throat.

ACV can also relieve sinus congestion. Potassium and acetic acid found in ACV promote sinus drainage. Reap these effects by adding 1-2 tablespoons of ACV to a glass of water.

Do the early sunsets have you feeling tired? ACV's amino acid content helps boost energy.

Reap these effects by adding 1-2 tablespoons of ACV to a glass of water.
